ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Gina Spadafori:

Gina Spadafori is the author or co-author of more than a dozen top-selling books on pets and their care, including Dogs For Dummies and Birds For Dummies.

She has been an award-winning nationally syndicated pet-care columnist, and she has written hundreds of articles for top national and international media outlets. She currently works as a veterinary medical writer.

Gina lives on agricultural land halfway between the California State Capitol and the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. The latter is especially convenient, as she shares her life with more animals than many would consider sensible, including a small herd of Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats along with cats, dogs, chickens, and occasional visiting horses and ponies.

Lauren E. Demos:

Lauren E. Demos, BVMS, Hons BSc, Diplomate, ABVP (Feline Practice) is a board-certified feline specialist who in 2017 was elected the youngest president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners.

She is a feline medicine consultant for the Veterinary Information Network, and is on the Fear Free Initiative advisory board, working to make going to the veterinarian a less stressful experience for cats and their owners.

Dr. Demos studied music for her undergraduate work before focusing on veterinary medicine. She attended veterinary school at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia, performing post-graduate research on feline papillomaviruses. She has lectured at major veterinary conferences, both in North America and internationally.

She works in clinical practice in Michigan, and she is passionate about promoting feline health and medicine through education. She enjoys the company of several cats, including Pancake, who accompanies her on her sailboat for adventures on the Great Lakes.

Dr. Paul D. Pion:

Dr. Paul D. Pion holds a BS and a DVM from Cornell University. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Specialty of Cardiology). He interned at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, completed a residency in Cardiology at UC Davis, a post-doctorate in Pharmacology at Columbia University, and did the coursework and research toward his Ph.D. at UC Davis.

Dr. Pion cofounded Veterinary Information Network (VIN) in 1991. He is the Chief Executive Officer, President, and director of VIN. He was a full-time instructor and researcher at UC Davis where he was responsible for breakthrough research on nutrition and heart disease in cats.

While at UCD, he made an important research discovery that has touched the lives of every cat in the world: He proved that a deficiency of a single amino acid, taurine, was causing heart disease in cats.

His discovery was published as a cover article in SCIENCE, one of the most competitive and respected research journals, and more importantly, led to the reformulation of the world’s cat foods and the virtual eradication of a heart disease that once afflicted tens of thousands of cats.

Paul has been awarded :

★ A Physician’s Science Award from the National Institutes of Health.
★ A Small Animal Research Award by Purina.
★ The National Phi Zeta Award for one of the two most outstanding manuscripts in 1989.
